Some people have asked me: What is Web 2.0?
It is not a network or a mark-up language. It is not hardware or software. It is a concept.
The first generation of internet users liked to download. They were passive users. They liked to play games against the computer. They liked to type into the internet a phrase like "directions to Las Vegas" and receive a print-out. Amazing!
The second generation of internet users likes to upload. They are active (and interactive) users. They like to play games against each other in real time. They like to upload photos of the party onto their myspace, facebook or flickr sites, and then admire the photos and exclaim "that party was crunk!"
It is this change of habits, trends, attitudes, and the accompanying internet tools that comprise "Web 2.0"
For example, 6 or 7 years ago, websites were always asking for your credit card number. Not anymore. Google's AdSense figured that out. With millions of websites, the competition is no longer for your credit card number (which only a few gave out anyway) but for your attention.
Here's a Web 2.0 site:
www.y8.com
It's Thun's favortie site. It has 118 pages of games, and all the games are FREE! People love to post their games. Then they love to see how many users are playing their game, and how many people are voting for their game, etc.
One of the games is called Hot Dog Bush. Bush is ceremoniously kicked out of the White House. Then he needs a job, so he becomes a hot dog vendor on the streets of New York. Your task, as the player, and as George Bush, is to quickly serve hot dogs, burgers, fires, cokes, etc. to New Yorkers who can easily get impatient and lose their temper.
Now, every time Thun seees George Bush on TV, he shouts, "Look, Daddy!" and points his finger at the bumbling idiot and exclaims, "Hot Dog Bush!"
My sentiments exactly.
