Selling Corn

We spent another weekend at the country house.

For the first time, I had no work to do. I played with the boys and played Free Cell on my computer. I did some reading, some writing, and a few Sudokus, too. I was supposed to cut the grass, but I paid Poo's 16-year-old nephew to do it instead. He did a fine job.

Whenever we drive up, we arrive about sunset on Friday evening. Sometimes we see elephants; sometimes we don't. The most elephants we have ever seen is three.

But this time we saw 8 elephants! How unusual. Except: we also saw three pick-ups full of farangs, gazing at the elephants. There are obviously a few enterprising Thais who realize they can charge big money to farangs to go see the elephants. They must be putting food on the side of the road. We also saw 14 monkeys on the way back.

Now we grow corn on our property. White corn; it's pretty tasty, actually. On Saturday night, Poo told me: "tomorrow, my mother and I will go sell the corn."

Fine.

Sunday morning, Poo woke me up at 5:45 to tell me: "my mother and I will go sell the corn now."

Fine.

Three minutes later, I heard the truck crash into a fencepost. There was a lot of screaming. I jumped out of bed, and , in my underwear, went to see the commotion. Poo was trying to switch gears, into or out of reverse (she doesn't drive much). Her relatives were yelling, "Mick is here now! Mick is here now! Don't drive anymore!"

So, at 6:00 AM, I went to the market to sell the corn. Maybe they were expecting me to stay, but, without coffee, I went home and went back to sleep.

Later, I went back to pick them up. Poo told me, "We were successful! Everybody liked our corn. We sold it for 10 Baht per kilo. It was so much fun! Of course, we know everybody, so we give them discount. Next week, you must come. You can be mean and not give them discount!"

That's NOT gonna happen!
