Mathematics and Emotion

Today I watched a famous TV personality in Thailand: K. Maa (Ms. Horse). She is a post-op katoey, a transsexual; as Poo says, "she cut it off already."

She was entertaining us on a Thai TV show: Are you as smart as a fourth grader? Poo called me into the room: "Daddy, come quick! it's mathematics!"

K. Maa was attempting a fourth grade mathematics question: "a typist can type English at 3240 words per hour. How many words can she type per minute?"

K. Maa was living it up. She gasped and sighed. She wiped her eyebow. She threw her arms into the air. She declared "I hate mathematics!!!" The whole audience laughed.

She understands what so many mathematicians and math teachers don't get: mathematics is a very emotional subject.

By the way, she got it right. She whipped off the calculation as the TV cameras were examining her diamond bracelet, gold rings, and carefully manicured eyebrows. The answer is 54.
