Jesse Jackson, 1988

Tomorrow Jesse Jackson is coming to Bangkok.

In 1988, I was the unofficial campaign manager for Jesse Jackson in Los Alamos County, New Mexico. Actually, I was the only person from Los Alamos who attended Jesse's rally in Santa Fe, so they asked me, "do you want to be the campaign manager for Los Alamos?" and I said "sure." They gave me some stickers and pamphlets and off I went.

Los Alamos is the birthplace of the Atomic Bomb and a severely right-wing town. I went door to door campaigning for Jesse. One Mexican girl felt sorry for me, so she invited me into her house and gave me some lemonade. Otherwise, people pretty much slammed their doors in my face.

That year, Jesse did pretty well in Michigan, but not so well in Los Alamos. I think he got about 5 votes. Except for my efforts, he probably would have received only 2 or 3.
