Becoming a History Teacher

Beginning in August, I will be a History Teacher. I'm excited and it's going to be fun, for me anyway; hopefully my students will like it, too.

At first I thought, "no problem, I took a lot of History courses--I read a lot of history books!" Then I started reading more closely and I realized how much I don't know, how much I've forgotten, and how much the theories have changed since I studied history 20+ years ago!

So I've been reading books like crazy. Currently, I'm reading an excellent book: Paris, 1919 by Margaret Macmillan.

Every day I'm stuffing more facts into my brain--OMG: names, dates, places, Polish communists, Abyssinian warriors, Moro insurrections--you name it! The only problem is: my brain is already full. I've stuffed so much crap into it over the years that there is no more disk space!

So I'm forgetting stuff just as fast as I'm learning it. Who knows what? Mostly mathematics, I suppose. But I'm afraid that one day I will wake up and realize I have forgotten how to tie my shoes.

Fortunately, I live in Thailand and every day I wear Crocs. Not the real Crocs, the fake ones that cost 100 Baht.

So now I know why you were asking me all those questions about history class...

I hope their won't be any McCarthy witch hunts in our study of the cold war next year:)

Oh, there's going to be McCarthy witch hunts alright: like, "HAVE YOU WRITTEN YOUR ESSAY?" type of witch hunts. ;-)

Students who do not finish their essays on time are Un-IB, and there is an eely network of them that has infiltrated the internet with clandestine support from that Evil Empire known as Teenage Laziness!

Unfortunately, you will probably be subjected to my Cold War stories about when I lived in Berlin as a child, and our "bomb shelter" was actually my uncle's wine cellar!

Yeah.. I agree with Tim. It sucks we're done with history for high school :( Also, have fun with the Year 11/12 Further Math class :) Me, Tim and Jeesun are giving them an intro tommorow.

OH NO! I feel bad for your new students Mr. Mick! At least you don't write essays in math, so you can't pick on people's bad grammar and lack of vocabulary...

Which school are you teaching in?

Ummmmm, Karan, it's this school on Soi 15; I can't remember its name. They were desperate for teachers, so they offered me a job even though I am a grammar Nazi! --mick
