Last Week's blog about "should ToK be optional?" generated quite a bit of interesting discussion. The result was a 50-50 split. I was surprised by that.
Today's question is: Should Mathematics be optional (for 11th and 12th graders)?
I didn't take mathematics in 11th grade or 12th grade. I was into History and English back then. I took AP US History, AP European History, AP English and a course called "The African American Experience" with Reverend Johnson. I did my research paper on Jimi Hendrix. Reverend Johnson gave me an "A". Thank you, Reverend Johnson.
It was the best course I have ever taken, and I would have never taken it if I had been required to take Calculus.
So, please answer the survey to your left.

Unless one wants to go into engineering/mathematics/other related fields, I don't see the need for maths past addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and an basic understanding of probability. Provided the student has learned these before grade 11, I would say make Maths optional.
wishful thinking people!
even if you want it to be, it will never be!
I was buying a new kitchen appliance at Zen: Special 720 Baht. I took it to the clerk at the counter, who, as usual, was chatting with four other salespeople with nothing to do. He rang it up and told me: "900 Baht!" No, I pointed to the sign: "720 Baht!" Then, all the idle salespeople said: "Discount 10%" so he pressed the "Discount 10%" button. The register said: 810 Baht. "No," said the salespeople, "Discount 15%" so he pressed the "Discount 15%" button. The register said: 765 Baht. "No," said the salespeople, "Discount 20%" so he pressed the "Discount 20%" button and the price was right! The salespeople felt so smart, but I promise: they can't even multiply or divide, but they don't need to!
