For the third weekend in a row, we spent the weekend at the country house. It's nice up there.
Yesterday, driving home from the market, we encountered an elephant. Usually, I just drive on by, but this time I sensed something was not quite right. There were two pick-up trucks stationed on the other side of the elephant. They were going downhill; we were going uphill. Thun and Jason were excited; Poo was scared. Then, one of the pick-ups raced by the elephant, and past us, and this got the elephant excited. He started charging towards us. I put it into reverse and started backing down the mountain at 40 km/hr.
Suddenly, there was a loud noise. An eighteen-wheel truck had come upon the scene, going fast downhill, and he wasn't going to stop! He just pulled on his horn, loudly and continuously, and headed straight at the elephant, travelling more than 80 km/hr. I though he was out of control. The elephant turned, looked, and then scrambled back into the jungle. I pulled to the side, let the screaming truck go by, and then quickly sped past the spot.
Poo has been holding her heart and talking about it ever since. "I was so scared of that elephant! I think he was sick! He just wanted to go wild! Any elephant can do that !"
"I was more scared of that truck!" I told her.
Today, driving by the spot, we noticed the elephant has trampled all the Buddhist flags, Thai flags, and forestry markers that usually decorate the side of the road. It looks like a hurricane has hit. The elephant had gone wild.
