The Modern Method

I have a joke with the Year 11s: “Today I will teach using the Modern Method.” It is usually Stella that retorts:

“You mean you’re not going to teach.”

Stella’s mother would be upset to learn that I use the Modern Method. She wants me to use the Chinese Method.

Sometimes I use the Chinese Method (go slowly, step by step, with lots of drills and practice), sometimes I use the Socratic Method (ask questions, answer them, and let the conversation drift to something interesting) and sometimes I use the Modern Method (shut up and let the technology do the talking).

On Monday, four girls were studying for their math test during lunch. When lunch was over and it was time for math class, I didn’t have the heart to tell them: “girls, stop studying math and listen to what I say.” So I used the Modern Method. The other students came in, sat down and began to study. I worked on my notes for convex and concave functions, occasionally wandering about the room, answering questions and checking on the students. This time, the Modern Method worked; other times, I’m not so sure.
